What Inspires Me – Upcycling, Recycling, and Reimagined Beauty
By Sorren Groshinski
In my work, inspiration lives in the overlooked, the discarded, and the forgotten. I’m drawn to materials that already carry a history—timber with scars, metals with rust, fabrics that have lived a life before mine touches them. Upcycling and recycling aren’t just techniques for me; they’re a philosophy, a way of seeing beauty in what most people walk past.
Every object has a story, and I’m fascinated by the idea that something broken can become whole in a completely new way. I love taking what’s been thrown out or abandoned and giving it a second life, reshaping its purpose and its energy. There’s something powerful in turning waste into wonder—transforming what once had no value into something meaningful, emotive, and alive.
Working with reclaimed materials also mirrors the themes that run through my art: transformation, resilience, and renewal. Just as people carry their own cracks and layers, so do the objects I work with. When I rebuild, repaint, or reshape these materials, I’m honouring their past while guiding them into a new form. It’s the same journey many of us go on—taking what life has given us, even the hard parts, and turning it into something better.
Upcycling fuels my creativity because it challenges me to look differently, to imagine possibilities beyond what’s in front of me. Every piece starts with a question: What could this become?
And from there, the work evolves—raw, organic, and full of character.
Sustainability is part of it, but deeper than that, it’s the soul of materials that inspires me. Nothing is ever truly rubbish; it just hasn’t met the right hands yet. In my studio and gallery on Grey Street, these reclaimed pieces find their voice again—reborn into artworks that carry both their old stories and my own.
